Requirements for Survival
Every human, and animal, needs three basic things to be able to survive; food, water and shelter. These are necessities at the most basic level. Having any two of the three can help boost your chances, but realistically it is a balance of each that gives us the best chance to survive.
Water - Water is extremely important to help our bodies maintain hydration, especially in extreme elements. It is arguably the most important nutrient we need to keep our bodies healthy. Unlike other vitamin deficiencies that can sometimes take a week or more to make you ill, lack of water can affect you within a matter of hours, and within a few days, can kill you.
Food - Food is required to give our bodies the strength and energy needed to perform the tasks of the day. It helps provide us with vitamins and minerals that can help us fight off infection, illness and help our bodies repair itself. However, food in and of itself is not enough for continued existence, we must have a balanced diet that provides our bodies with everything it needs to be healthy.
Shelter - Shelter is required to give us an escape from the elements. There are times when this may not be as important, but there will be times where it means everything. Extreme heat, cold and moisture can not only cause our day to be miserable, but also causes our bodies to work extra hard to maintain our overall health. Even a simple shelter is better than no shelter at all.

In your class notebook, write a reflection on food, water and shelter. Do you agree that all three are important? Is there anything you feel that is missing? If so, justify why it's a necessity.
